Also I never said I want to yell “stop” and freeze tech exactly as it is now. And yes, for that reason some tech needs to be repudiated, not just kept where it is.
Also, my main point stands: basing present decision making around protecting humanity against Von Neumann probes and the future explosion of the sun is insane and unbelievably impractical. Having our decision-making be governed by such abstract, fantastical, and distant ends means that our decisions are not based on their actual outcomes for current and near-future generations. Which means we won’t even survive to see the big scary sun explosion.
