Today, I listened to the story of Shruti. My microphone didn’t record properly, so I cut out my questions, and kept her answers. This was more of an opportunity for me to learn about her experience than to pontificate with my own opinions.

As a young Indian girl living in Kenya, she experienced crime, murder, corruption, and terrorism, as the relative safety of an Indian ethnic enclave began to deteriorate. She was one of more than 4,000 people who were injured in Osama Bin Laden’s bombing of the American Embassy in 1998.

She explains:

  • Differences between north and south Indians

  • How Indians first arrived in Kenya

  • How conditions in Kenya changed

  • Interactions between Hinduism, Islam, and Christianity

  • Relationships between Indian, Chinese, and European cultures
