It’s worth parsing out the scientific versus common-knowledge, everyday senses of the word “addiction.” It is clear that people are addicted to things like porn and video games, and can be to any dopaminic activity. Maybe “compulsion” is a better word.

you are not engaging with my arguments I make against exactly what you're saying -- what's the point of commenting without reading?

Everyone here has read your full article; we just think a lot of it is stupid.

SeeC's avatar

Well he routinely say stupid stuff. It’s kind of entertaining to be honest.

But in the case of porn, anyone who has tried without knows the truth if he is honest with himself…

Dialgatime321's avatar

Really, we need to acknowledge "orgasm addiction" is just called "being a healthy virile man".

Issue is fewer and fewer men have access to cunt.

And now we have arrived at the problem.

Benson's avatar

You still have access, and more than ever before. You just don’t take the opportunity bc of online porn.

ZFG_Abroad's avatar

Go read the sad statistics regarding the absurd 'skew ratio' for online dating apps in regards to how women view 80% of men basically as invisible. Then run your mouth please. Add on radical feminism that has invaded every college in the US for decades, turning male sex drive into a dangerous pathology, etc. and you are so full of sh-t I simply don't know where to start. Back to Reddit with thee, post haste...

Dialgatime321's avatar

I definitely don't believe "more than ever before". Of course it depends which guy you are.

Dialgatime321's avatar

I don't even look at online porn more than five times per year you absolute troglodyte

Please stop thinking that because you know the word dopamine you know anything about addiction. First off, what you're referring to is habituation, not addiction. Addiction has a much broader definition, that includes compulsory behavior that one continues to perform despite significant negative consequences, both physical and social. Habituation is more straight forward physical dependence, resulting in withdrawal symptoms. Excessive porn actually causes both. So much of the argument today around this subject, what is addiction or isn't, comes from lay people who are defending a particular point of view. There are addictions that have stronger habitual physical withdrawal symptoms involved (i.e.-alcohol, opiates, barbiturates) and those that don't. Dismissing the phycological aspects of addiction is a dangerous game one is very likely to lose.

lots here but the part at the end feels right, having experienced a depressed, porn- and sex-obsessed partner shoehorn “polyamory” and “communism” into our lives as the solution to his self-hatred issue

I partially agree that porn isn't the entire cause of the compulsive repetitive pursuit of itself; however, you only really wrote against NOFAP rather than actual scholarly research around the topic.

If your goal was to assert that NOFAP is a cult, therefore porn addiction isn't real, you succeeded.

But if your goal was to prove that porn addiction isn't real, you failed.

Maybe cite actual research next time and approach the topic of sex addiction (which even I'll admit is still being researched) with some nuance rather than "trust me bro".

"If a mosquito sucks blood until it explodes, we do not say 'the mosquito has a blood addiction.'"

If a mosquito drinks blood til it explodes, I'd say that mosquito totally has a blood addiction. I theorize that if permitted to, my dog would also absolutely eat til she exploded. However, I do not test this theory, since I don't want her to explode, and this is why she does not get free reign of the pantry.

That dopamine chart seems off to me. Food gives that much bigger of a spike, *two hours* later??!? I thought people mostly just felt full after they ate. If that were actually the case, I guess it explains obesity, but that seems weird.

DeepLeftAnalysis🔸's avatar

Darwinian errors in animal instincts are not addictions because addictions are a moral concept. They are not distinct from "weakness." We make a distinction because weak humans are considered superior to rapacious sinners -- we are not moral Darwinists.

TK-2042's avatar

Wow thats crazy. I just have a negative dopamine spike when cooking and then it resets to baseline after eating. If i didnt have to eat I wouldn't.

Using the word “feminine” to describe a negative attribute equally practiced by both genders is sure something. Like, I know it’s the language of the people you’re trying to talk to, but fuck you. Most young women are more proactive than most young men these days, so being a depressed fruity little loser is actually “masculine”.

DeepLeftAnalysis🔸's avatar

Using the phrase "fuck you" to describe a negative feeling that you're happening is sure something.

Echo Tracer's avatar

You expect to personally insult me but whine because I said a naughty word? And it IS a personal insult, to say that all women are this or that. I guarantee, if the standards were applied blindly, I’d add up to more of a man than you. So yeah, fuck you, professional opinion haver, for thinking you have the right to insinuate that I’m weaker than you, you’d last five minutes doing what I do before you called in with hurt fee fees.

DeepLeftAnalysis🔸's avatar

I never personally insulted you because idk who you are -- I wrote an article, and you responded with flamboyant narcissism.

Echo Tracer's avatar

I take misogyny personally and there’s no fucking reason I shouldn’t- every misogynistic comment you make is a personal insult to every woman on the planet.

As for narcissism- you’re the one who thinks you have something to say that the world needs to hear, what could be more narcissistic?

Marko's avatar

Seethe moron. Young women are 'more proactive' doing clacky email jobs which is why everything is shit LOL. "Young women are more proactive", yea look at society rn dawg, you don't want this.

Echo Tracer's avatar

As opposed to what, Afghanistan? Look at any country in the world where the power is wholly in the hands of men. They’re all shitholes and it’s no coincidence. Have you seen the state of a house occupied only by men? And also, software engineering is a fucking clacky job. You’re white collar bitches now too, you fucking professional opinion haver. Fuck off down a mine if you want some respect from me, you worthless little fruit.

Lmfao women were invited late to the party and now claim responsibility for the bounty of civilisation whilst persisting on its fumes haha, quite typical.

Btw, I'm racist too. I have no qualms admitting that brown men aren't very good at creating or managing civilisations :)

Echo Tracer's avatar

It’s a trend which holds true for all races- where men are allowed to treat women like shit, society suffers, because though men don’t like to give women credit for anything the truth is you don’t learn to be civilised from your fathers. A man who saw his mother treated like a slave, will never be a man.

Actually we just killed undesirables for 1000 years. Men, utilising the apparatus of state.

Women are more likely to sympathise with those upon whom justice is done and to agitate against it, or to lend their support to those who carry on this feminine ethic (of harm avoidance and egalitarianism).

Echo Tracer's avatar

So weird that men actually aren’t good at deciding who should and shouldn’t be undesirable lol because you have no fucking clue what matters because you all have testosterone brain damage that makes you act like chimp/lemmings. Go die in a field over the colour of a piece of cloth, that was how we got rid of “undesirables”- aka, excess men.

Echo Tracer's avatar

Like, at least women are still doing SOMETHING, you gooning, whining, call of duty addicted whiny little BITCH.

You make a good point, and I like that you constantly think and talk about things which require courage.

I recently read chapter 34 of Genesis, and it’s interesting to see an inversion. People used to make cases against porn because of what it does to women, now we talk about what it does to lonely eunuchs.

DeepLeftAnalysis🔸's avatar

I do not believe porn "does" much in an active sense, I believe it is just filling the passive emptiness.

Norman Finkelstein discussing gooning was not something I expected to see today.

Iskandar Maccabeus's avatar

Interesting that you'd write about this (you're correct), have you looked into the "independent" or influencer nofap therapy people? They come in two forms: "trained professional" who basically sells mindfulness techniques for a profit, or men (w/ their wives) who monetize his unfaithfulness for lost people. None of these people have real solutions, same with the "eazy peazy method", they are all designed to dramatize change without producing results.

“ In South Korea, they did ban porn, and people are obsessed with plastic surgery.”

What a wild conspiracy. No porn = possible body dysmorphia and a desire to change one’s facial structure?

Wild conclusion…

I understand your point that porn addiction stems from deeper rooted problems. Or even environment issues such as isolation or loneliness.

This however is a poorly constructed article. This critique of Gary is mixed in with misleading information that may hurt some readers.

If you have read the book your brain on porn, you will see that it comes to the same conclusion as yourself. That profound change in oneself is often needed to stop a habitual habit like compulsive porn watching.

We can argue the pedantics of whether porn addiction is a real thing. But, personally I feel this articles offers little value and is more damaging to someone’s pathway to quitting porn.

Well said. This piece is all over the place. I suppose its just rage bait to bring viewership in but still this kind of smarmy, "addiction is actually good! stuff is so trite

Unfortunately, most of us feel compelled to self-medicate in some form or another (besides caffeine), albeit it’s more or less ‘under control’. And there are various forms of self-medicating, from the relatively mild to the dangerously extreme, that include non-intoxicant-consumption addictions: e.g. chronic shopping/shoplifting, gambling, sex, pornography, over-eating ....

If such self-medicating forms are anything like drug intoxication or substance addiction, it should follow that: the greater the induced euphoria or escape one attains from it, the more one wants to repeat the experience; and the more intolerable one finds their non-self-medicating reality, the more pleasurable that escape will likely be perceived. In other words: the greater one’s mental pain or trauma while not self-medicating, the greater the need for escape from one’s reality — all the more addictive the euphoric escape-form will likely be.

The vast majority of obese people who considerably over-eat likely do so to mask mental pain or even PTSD symptoms. I utilized that method myself during much of my pre-teen years, and even later in life after ceasing my (ab)use of cannabis or alcohol. I don’t take it lightly, but it’s possible that someday I could instead return to over-eating.

As for porn, I wouldn’t know anything about that. Except for maybe the Big'uns magazines a friend accidently left at my house.
