Erlkönig represents the death of a child at the hand of an ancient pedophile. In the Scandinavian version, the antagonist is the Erlkönig’s daughter. If you combine both stories, the common theme is malicious seduction. A beautiful boy who is taken from his father, seduced by darkness.

Schubert composed the melody when he was 17 years old. Imagine being 17 and producing such beautiful music.

Schubert died at age 31. Syphilis was the AIDS of the time. Tuberculosis was a killer. Imagine having created mature works of beauty at age 17, and dying at age 31, a hero, a legend.

What did I spend my childhood on? Consuming. Isn’t this a tragedy? Is there anything great left to do?
